A handsome, quietly confident equestrian portrait in the great English sporting tradition. A dappled grey hunter stands squarely in profile — mane neatly button-braided, double bridle polished, coat worked up in soft silvery greys. The rider sits easy in a black hunt coat, stock tie, and bowler, gazing off across rolling golden hills. Signed and dated lower right, 1939. In a pale gilt frame that suits the cool palette beautifully. Big enough to anchor a room — a real find for a horse person, a hunt-country library, or anyone building an English country look.
Dimensions: 27 3/4" H x 33" W
Medium: Oil on canvas
Age: 1939 (dated)
Origin: Unknown
Signature/mark: Signed and dated lower right, "JC Johnston / 1939"
Disclosures: The canvas has damage: two horizontal tears in the sky (one just in front of the rider, one to the upper right) and a small pinpoint puncture above the horse's neck — all clearly visible in the photos. All three are in the open sky area, away from the horse and rider, and a conservator could address them; priced accordingly. General surface wear and light craquelure consistent with age. Frame shows honest wear to the finish.
