Antique miniature portrait — young gentleman in Renaissance dress

A small hand-painted portrait with a lot of presence. A young man looks out at you from under a slate-blue flat cap trimmed in gold studs, with a white ostrich plume curling behind. He wears a salmon-orange doublet covered in fine gold embroidery, a white collar tied at the throat, and a deep blue robe lined in white ermine with black tail spots. Two chains cross his chest — a heavy jeweled collar set with red stones and pearls, and a long gold chain ending in a pendant. The painting is tiny, but the detail is remarkable: you can see individual stitches in the embroidery and single strokes in the fur.

Signed in small script at the right edge. Set under convex glass in a pierced brass oval bezel, mounted on dark brown velvet, in a glossy burl wood frame with gilt scrollwork at each corner. Handsome on a shelf, a bookcase, or as the anchor of a small gallery wall.
