A handsome 19th-century writing slope (or traveler's desk) in rosewood, lavishly decorated with cut-brass arabesque inlay across the lid and front. The hinged top opens to a sloped, leather-lined writing surface framed in gilt tooling, with fitted compartments for pen and ink and a side drawer for stationery.
Brass edge binding, decorative corner mounts, and a working lock with key complete the piece. The mellow patina, soft wear to the leather, and warm glow of the aged brass speak to generations of use. A striking decorative object that doubles as a functional desk accessory.
- Dimensions: 8” H x 20” W x 10 3/4” D [when closed]
- Medium: Rosewood with cut-brass inlay, brass mounts and binding, leather writing surface, original working lock and key
- Age: Early 19th century
- Origin: England - Thompson Birmingham
- Signature/mark: “Thompson Birm” stamped on original lock
- Disclosures: Age-related wear and patina, including losses and lifting to some brass inlay, scuffing, and split to the leather writing surface, and general patina to wood and metal; the side drawer, lock, and key are present and functional, however, the key to one of the interior compartments is missing (a generic barrel key may be sourced by buyer at local salvage/antiques shops)
