Antique cows in a muted pasture, signed, oil on canvas

A warm, quiet pasture scene in oil. A white cow with dark spots looks straight out at you, while a red-brown cow grazes close beside her in tall grass. The sky is soft and hazy, a few birds drift overhead, and a small herd rests far off in the field behind them. The brushwork is loose and easy — you can see it in the grass and in the shaggy texture of the coats.

It is signed on the lower left (possibly H. Schouten, the Belgian painter known for exactly this kind of cattle and farmyard scene). The deep walnut-toned frame and clean matting make the greens really come forward.

Disclosures: Sold as-is in good antique condition, framed; surface patina with a few small dark specks and spots in the sky and scattered flecks of paint loss in the lower grass (see photos); a small canvas patch on the back indicates an old repair; the frame shows minor wear, nicks, and scuffs with one small nail hole in the upper section of the matting; the signature is partly worn, and the attribution is based on reading the signature alone — not appraised or authenticated
